HEARD AROUND TOWN
Poll Workers Needed
Paul Madore, the new Democratic registrar of voters, took the opportunity of a visit with Town Clerk Debbie Nelson to put out a call for help to staff the upcoming primary. The pay isn’t bad (in the neighborhood of $20 an hour) but the demand is great and the hours long. The new Republican registrar of voters, Ron Bombero has issued a similar call for poll workers. Various duties are available. Early voting runs Aug. 3-9 and voting hours on primary day (August 11 for both parties) are from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. All dates need to be staffed. Anyone who is interested may contact Madore at demregistrar@norfolkct.org or Bombero at repubregistrar@norfolkct.org.
Get Rid of Stuff in June
Norfolk residents will have multiple opportunities to shred and shed this month, beginning with Shred-It Day on June 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the National Iron Bank. Cosponsored by the Norfolk Hub, this is a chance to unload dusty files and dump decades-old tax returns. And for those who have hoarded old paint cans or containers of herbicides, June 20 is Hazardous Waste Collection Day sponsored by the Northwest Hills Council of Governments. This year’s collection point is the Falls Village Public Works Garage at 100 Railroad St. What’s key is knowing what can be accepted and what will be rejected. No electronics, motor oil or car batteries will be accepted. Registration is also required through a link at https://www.nhcogct.gov/. Look for the calendar listing to find the form.
Town Clerk Extends Hours
New stickers for Tobey Pond and the transfer station will become available on June 1, along with dog licenses and this year Norfolk residents will be able to pick those up on Friday mornings. The town clerk’s office will be open for extended hours from 9 a.m. to noon every Friday from June 5 through Aug. 28. For those who would rather not come into the office, applications for dog licenses can also be filed online—just look for the resource links for the town clerk’s office on norfolkct.org. On the other hand, isn’t it more fun to visit with Town Clerk Debbie Nelson and Assistant Town Clerk Trina Hamlin?
Come One, Come All!
The Foundation for Norfolk Living will hold a formal ribbon cutting for the Haystack Woods affordable housing community on June 22 at 11 a.m. The 10 super-energy efficient houses are located on Haystack Woods Road, which is a new town road off Old Colony Road. Carpooling is encouraged (parking is limited) and guests will have an opportunity to see what a finished home looks like, as well as how landscaping has changed the formerly vacant parcel.
