Summertime in Our Unique Town
By Henry Tirrell
While we had snow flying just last month, all of a sudden we are almost into summer, and it is starting to feel like it. There is more activity in town, with more on the way. In addition to the ongoing major projects and all of the amazing summer activities and events, we are excited to hear about the upcoming restaurant dinner service and the increased activity at Infinity Hall.
Every season in Norfolk is beautiful and unique in its own way, but there is something special about the summer. For such a small town, we have a lot of wonderful places and experiences to offer. One of those is Tobey Pond. Our fantastic crew of lifeguards will be getting prepared, so remember to get your stickers to enjoy the beautiful beach and take a dip to cool off as it heats up. We kindly ask that you display your stickers and follow the rules of Tobey Pond. While you’re getting your Tobey sticker, don’t forget your transfer station stickers and your dog licenses this June, all available at the Town Clerk’s office.
One of my favorite things about Norfolk and one of my favorite days of the year is Memorial Day. Every year I am moved by the gathering of our town to remember the people who served from our town. Even in the rain, without the marching bands, the parade and service this year were fantastic. They highlight everything special about our community–from those people who served and are no longer with us, to those who march and those who continue to serve. All of it, plus the road race is made possible by the amazing volunteers that keep our town going. This year our fire department had responded to multiple calls the night and morning before, and after all of they, along with volunteers from the Lions Club, marched, welcomed the town at the firehouse and hosted the road race.
There are many other people and organizations that work to make this town the special place it is. Sometimes they are leading the town in special events and other times they are less visible, yet they all work together towards building and supporting this amazing community. If you can take a moment this summer to reflect on what makes you happy or thankful here in town, please do, and consider some small way to contribute, even just showing up and when we gather to remember can go a long way. We have a lot of pride and joy in this town, and rightfully so.
Stay safe and enjoy this town for all it holds.
