Imagine stepping inside the enormous body of a humpback whale! Children and families at the Norfolk Library had the chance to do just that when The Whalemobile brought Nile, its life-sized inflatable humpback whale, to the library for a special Summer Reading Finale. As the culminating program of the summer reading program, this immersive experience transformed the library into an ocean of discovery. Children stepped inside Nile to explore whale anatomy and learn how these remarkable animals live, communicate, feed and migrate through the world’s oceans. They also had the opportunity to examine real whale artifacts and discover how scientists study whales in the wild.

Humpback whales are fascinating not only because of their enormous size, but also because of their remarkable behaviors. They can grow to nearly 50 feet long and weigh as much as 40 tons. Known for their complex songs, powerful breaches and extraordinary migrations, humpback whales travel thousands of miles between feeding and breeding grounds. Along the way, they play an important role in marine ecosystems, helping move nutrients through the ocean as they feed and migrate.

The program also introduced children and families to some of the challenges whales face, including entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, underwater noise, pollution and changing ocean conditions. These lessons helped demonstrate that protecting whales goes hand in hand with protecting the health of the ocean—an ecosystem that supports people, wildlife and communities around the world. More than an opportunity to walk inside a giant whale, the experience encouraged children to ask questions, explore and see the ocean in a new way. Nile brought the world of humpback whales to life inside the library, turning science and conservation into an unforgettable, hands-on adventure. The program provided a fitting finale to a summer of reading, learning and discovery—and left children with an important reminder: no matter where we live, we are all connected to the ocean
