A Gathering
Poetry and Prose Bloom on the Porch
By Nels White
In 2015, a group from the United Church of Christ and the Norfolk community started getting together regularly to practice their writing skills and to share their inspirations. They called themselves the “Writer’s Group.” The late Eve Thew was an originator of the group, and the meetings were held on the sunporch at Eve and John Thew’s house on Ashpohtag Road. Two decades on, the group continues to meet and share.
John Thew, an original member, agreed that the group could use a better name and suggested “Eve’s Porch Writers.” As the group sometimes draws inspiration from outside writers, it is now known as “Eve’s Porch Writers and Readers.”
These days the group meets twice monthly. On the first Monday of each month, it gathers at 10 a.m. at Geer Lodge, and on the third Monday it meets at 9:30 a.m. in Norfolk, often at Tea Cozy Cottage, the home of Nels and Phyllis White (continuing tradition with coffee, tea and treats and their sunporch in the summer). Occasionally, meetings are held in Battell Chapel. For those interested in reading a collection of past works, a booklet with samples of member’s work is available for purchase.
Anyone is welcome to share or just listen to readings and discussions of poetry and prose. Simply call the Church of Christ office at 860-542-5271 to verify the next meeting location and pull up a chair on Eve’s porch.
